Machined Tungsten for NASA

The Client:

nasa tungsten logoNASA is the agency of the United States government that is responsible for the nation’s civilian space program for aeronautics and aerospace research. United Space Alliance is an LLC joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin to consolidate many Space Shuttle program contracts to one prime contractor.

The Challenge:

With only three Shuttle missions left, United Space Alliance contacted MTS to provide an instrument housing capable of withstanding the direct heat of launch rocket blast. The time to the next scheduled launch was short!

The Vision:

A fast and accurate embodiment of the design envisioned by US Space Ops. Three of the instrument housings needed to be completed, inspected by Space Ops and shipped in time for the next launch.

The Solution:

A combination of conventional and non-conventional machining methods which created a finished part that met all design criteria and could be delivered on time for the launch.
