Aerospace - NASA/United Space Alliance:
Machined Tungsten for NASA
NASA is the agency of the United States government that is responsible for the nation’s civilian space program for aeronautics and aerospace research. United Space Alliance is an LLC joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin to consolidate many Space Shuttle program contracts to one prime contractor.
With only three Shuttle missions left, United Space Alliance contacted MTS to provide an instrument housing capable of withstanding the direct heat of launch rocket blast. Time prior to the next scheduled launch was short.
A fast and accurate embodiment of the design envisioned by US Space Ops. Three of the instrument housings needed to be completed, inspected by Space Ops and shipped in time for the next launch.
A combination of conventional and non-conventional machining methods which created a finished part that met all design criteria and could be delivered on time for the launch.
“Midwest Tungsten Service (Willowbrook, IL) worked hard to get the machined tungsten pistons to the launch site in order to support these last three launches. “
