Frequently asked questions

What is tungsten heavy alloy rod?

It is tungsten blended with small amounts of nickel and iron or copper, then pressed and sintered. It keeps most of tungsten's density while being far easier to machine than pure tungsten, which makes it a favorite of machine shops, labs and R&D teams.

Which alloy should I choose?

MT-17C (90% tungsten, nickel-copper) is non-magnetic. MT-17F (90% tungsten, nickel-iron) is our general-purpose machining grade. MT-17D adds molybdenum and is designed for die casting, where it extends die life and reduces rejects. MT-175, MT-18C, MT-18F and MT-185 carry 92.5–97% tungsten for higher density, and MT-18C is also non-magnetic.

How dense is tungsten alloy rod?

It depends on the alloy: MT-17C, MT-17F and MT-17D are 17 g/cm³ (0.614 lb/in³), MT-175 is 17.5 g/cm³ (0.632 lb/in³), MT-18C and MT-18F are 18 g/cm³ (0.65 lb/in³), and MT-185 is 18.5 g/cm³ (0.668 lb/in³). Even the lightest is more than twice the density of steel.

What standard does the rod meet?

Our tungsten heavy alloy rod is made to ASTM B777, and every lot is traceable.

What are the size tolerances?

Diameters are held to +0.003 / -0 inch, and standard 12 inch lengths are cut to -0, so you never receive a rod shorter than ordered.

Can you cut a rod to length or make a custom size?

Yes. We can cut or custom make rod to your specifications and also offer custom alloys. Email mts@tungsten.com for custom or out-of-stock sizes.

Can I get a material certificate?

Yes. All material is lot controlled, and a material certificate is available on request.

What other names does this material go by?

Equivalent trade names by alloy: MT-17C matches HA170C, HD 17, Dens21, CMW 1000, K1701 and M1000. MT-17F matches HA170, HD 17D, SD170, CMW 3000, K1700 and M3000. MT-175 matches HA175, HD 17.5, SD175 and K1750. MT-18C matches HA180C, HD 18, Dens25, CMW 2000, K1801 and M2000. MT-18F matches HA180, HD 18D, SD180, CMW 3950, K1800 and M3950. MT-185 matches HA185, HD 18.5, SD185, CMW 3970 and K1850.

Is tungsten alloy rod magnetic?

MT-17C and MT-18C, the nickel-copper alloys, are non-magnetic. The nickel-iron alloys (MT-17F, MT-175, MT-18F and MT-185) are slightly magnetic.
