Tolerances: (+/- 0.002" thickness)

MT-17C: 17g/cc density. 90% Tungsten, 6% Nickel, 4% Copper. High quality tungsten heavy alloy (W) plate conforms to international standard ASTM B777, Class 1, Type II & III. Material certifications for industrial products are available upon request with purchase. All material is lot controlled, stress relieved, and formed through high temperature pressing and sintering processes. This plate is perfect for machine shops, labs, research and development, and DIY machinists. Tungsten alloy is much easier to machine than traditional pure tungsten. Other material names that match the same ASTM standard: HA170C, HD 17, Dens21, CMW 1000, K1701, M1000.

MT-18C: 18g/cc density. 95% Tungsten, 3.5% Nickel, 1.5% Copper. High quality tungsten heavy alloy (W) sheet conforms to international standard ASTM B777, Class 3, Type II & III. Other material names that match the same ASTM standard: HA180C, HD 18, Dens25, CMW 2000, K1801, M2000.

MT-18F: 18g/cc density. 95% Tungsten, 3.5% Nickel, 1.5% Iron. High quality tungsten heavy alloy (W) plate conforms to international standard ASTM B777, Class 3, Type II & III. Other material names that match the same ASTM standard: HA180, HD 18D, SD180, CMW 3950, K1800, M3950.

MT-185: 18.5g/cc density. 97% Tungsten, 2.1% Nickel, 0.9% Iron. High quality tungsten heavy alloy (W) plate conforms to international standard ASTM B777, Class 4, Type II & III. Other material names that match the same ASTM standard: HA185, HD 18.5, SD185, CMW 3970, K1850.

Perfect for high density applications or for use in radiation shielding. The addition of the nickel/copper (or nickel/iron) matrix improves the machinability and ductility of these alloys over pure tungsten.

Frequently asked questions

Which alloy should I choose?

It comes down to density and binder. The 90% tungsten grades (MT-17C, MT-17F, MT-17D) run 17 g/cm³, the 95% grades (MT-18C, MT-18F) run 18 g/cm³, and MT-185 at 97% tungsten reaches 18.5 g/cm³. If you're matching an existing spec, trade names such as HD 17, CMW 2000, K1800, and M3950 cross-reference to the same ASTM B777 classes.

Is tungsten alloy easier to machine than pure tungsten?

Much easier. The nickel-copper or nickel-iron binder improves machinability and ductility over pure tungsten, so the plate machines well with conventional shop tooling.

How heavy is a plate?

As an example, a 12 x 12 inch MT-17C plate weighs about 22.6 lb at 0.25 inch thick and about 88 lb at 1 inch thick. Thinner sheet scales down accordingly, and the 18 and 18.5 g/cm³ alloys run proportionally heavier.

Is the plate magnetic?

The nickel-iron grades (F suffix) are slightly magnetic. The nickel-copper grades (C suffix) are essentially non-magnetic.

What is tungsten alloy plate used for?

High-density applications: counterweights and ballast, radiation shielding, and machined components where you need maximum mass in minimum space. It's a staple for machine shops, labs, R&D, and DIY machinists.

Can you cut a custom size or alloy?

Yes. We can cut or custom-make any plate to your specifications, and we offer custom alloys — contact mts@tungsten.com with your dimensions for a quote.

Do I get a material certificate?

Yes — a material cert is available with your shipment on request, and all material is lot controlled and stress relieved.
