New and Improved! This elemental cube set contains a pure titanium, pure copper, aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy, and a 95% pure tungsten cube. Each cube is engraved with the element's symbol, electron configuration (# per shell), and atomic mass. Base included. Enjoy an endless opportunity for metaphors and puns. Shock and amaze unsuspecting initiates into the world of metallurgical wonders. Tungsten, copper, titanium, magnesium, and aluminum cube set. 1" x 1" x 1". Compare and contrast the various properties of these perfectly formed cubes. Great conversation pieces. Machined from aerospace grade alloys, these cubes are an excellent contemporary addition for your desk at work or side table at home. Surprise your colleagues and friends with the cubes' material differences. Tungsten is one of the densest naturally occurring elements, and now you can add one of nature's wonders to your own collection. If you like the cubes, don't forget to check out our larger tungsten spheres.

A note on safety: Magnesium does not react with water unless it is already burning. For magnesium, pieces greater than 3mm thick are difficult to ignite but it is possible when heated to near the melting point of ~650C. If the piece ever does catch fire it should be extinguished with a Class D dry powder extinguishing agent rather than water.

Frequently asked questions

What is included in the set?

Five 1 inch cubes — one tungsten alloy, one copper, one titanium, one aluminum, and one magnesium — plus a modern display base. Each cube is engraved with its element's symbol, electron configuration, and atomic mass.

How much does each cube weigh?

Based on each metal's density, the tungsten cube weighs about 10.4 oz (295 g), copper about 5.2 oz (147 g), titanium about 2.6 oz (74 g), aluminum about 1.6 oz (44 g), and magnesium about 1 oz (28 g). Feeling the same size cube range from feather-light to startlingly heavy is the point of the set.

Are the cubes pure elements?

The titanium and copper cubes are pure. The aluminum and magnesium cubes are alloys, and the tungsten cube is a 95% tungsten heavy alloy — alloying is what makes these metals practical to machine into precise cubes.

Is the magnesium cube safe?

Yes, for normal handling and display. Magnesium does not react with water unless it is already burning, and pieces thicker than 3 mm are difficult to ignite — it takes heating to near its melting point of about 650°C. In the unlikely event it ever did catch fire, it should be extinguished with a Class D dry powder agent rather than water.

Who is the set for?

It is perfect for classrooms, offices, co-working spaces, science departments, and home schools — and for anyone who enjoys comparing the properties of metals side by side.

Is tungsten really that much denser than the others?

Yes. At about 18 g/cm³, the tungsten alloy cube is roughly ten times the density of the magnesium cube sitting next to it, and tungsten itself is one of the densest naturally occurring elements.
