New and Improved! This elemental cube set contains a pure titanium, pure copper, aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy, and a 95% pure tungsten cube. Each cube is engraved with the element's symbol, atomic number, and atomic mass. Enjoy an endless opportunity for metaphors and puns. Shock and amaze unsuspecting initiates into the world of metallurgical wonders. Tungsten, copper, titanium, magnesium, and aluminum cube set. 1.5" x 1.5" x 1.5". Compare and contrast the various properties of these perfectly formed cubes. Great conversation pieces. Machined from aerospace grade alloys, these cubes are an excellent contemporary addition for your desk at work or side table at home. Surprise your colleagues and friends with the cubes' material differences. Tungsten is one of the densest naturally occurring elements, and now you can add one of nature's wonders to your own collection. If you like the cubes, don't forget to check out our larger tungsten spheres.

A note on safety: Magnesium does not react with water unless it is already burning. For magnesium, pieces greater than 3mm thick are difficult to ignite but it is possible when heated to near the melting point of ~650C. If the piece ever does catch fire it should be extinguished with a Class D dry powder extinguishing agent rather than water.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy is each cube?

The tungsten cube weighs about 2.2 lb (1 kg). The copper cube is about 1.1 lb, titanium about 0.55 lb, aluminum about 0.33 lb, and magnesium about 0.21 lb — a ten-to-one weight spread across five identical-looking 1.5 inch cubes.

What's included in the set?

Five 1.5 inch cubes: tungsten alloy, copper, titanium, aluminum, and magnesium, each engraved with its element symbol, atomic number, and atomic mass. Choose the option with five aluminum display bases if you want each cube presented on its own stand.

Are the cubes pure metal?

The titanium and copper cubes are pure metal. The aluminum and magnesium cubes are machined from aerospace-grade alloys, and the tungsten cube is 95% tungsten heavy alloy — the alloy keeps nearly all of tungsten's density while allowing precision machining that pure tungsten can't easily take.

Are the cubes safe to handle?

Yes. None of the metals are radioactive or toxic in solid form. The one note is magnesium: a solid piece this size is very difficult to ignite — it takes heating near its melting point of about 650 °C — and if magnesium ever does burn, it should be extinguished with a Class D dry powder agent rather than water.

What is the set used for?

Comparing the metals. Every cube is the same size, so the difference between tungsten and magnesium is obvious the moment you pick them up — which makes the set a favorite for classrooms, science departments, offices, co-working spaces, and home schools.
