Why tungsten instead of steel?
Density. Tungsten alloy packs about twice the weight of steel into the same space, so you can put the maximum allowed weight exactly where you want it on the car instead of spreading it around.
Is it safe for kids to handle?

Yes. Solid tungsten alloy is inert — not radioactive and not toxic in solid form — making it a clean, safe derby weight.
Can I cut or drill the weight to fit?
Can I cut or drill the weight to fit?
Plan your placement around the supplied size instead. Tungsten alloy is far harder to cut or drill than steel, which is why these are made as incremental weights you can combine and position freely.
