Bar will have sharp i.e. unrounded edges.

MT-17C: (+/-0.002") (+0.060"/-0 length) 17g/cc density. 90% Tungsten, 6% Nickel, 4% Copper. High quality tungsten heavy alloy (W) bar, most sizes in 12" lengths, conforms to international standard ASTM B777, Class 1, Type II & III. All material is lot controlled, stress relieved, and formed through high temperature pressing and sintering processes. This bar is perfect for machine shops, labs, research and development, and DIY machinists. Tungsten alloy is much easier to machine than traditional pure tungsten. Other material names that match the same ASTM standard: HA170C, HD 17, Dens21, CMW 1000, K1701, M1000

Frequently asked questions

What sizes do the bars come in?

Most bars are square cross-sections from 0.25 inch up to 2.25 inch, in 12 inch lengths, plus select rectangular and cut pieces. Availability varies by alloy — MT-17F and MT-185 carry the fullest size runs.

Which alloy should I choose?

Density and binder. The 90% tungsten grades (MT-17C, MT-17F, MT-17D) run 17 g/cm³, the 95% grades (MT-18C, MT-18F) run 18 g/cm³, and MT-185 at 97% tungsten reaches 18.5 g/cm³. All conform to ASTM B777, and trade names such as HD 17, CMW 2000, and K1800 cross-reference to the same grades.

How heavy is a bar?

A 1 inch square MT-185 bar 12 inches long weighs about 8 lb; a 2.25 inch square bar in MT-17F is about 17 lb.

Is tungsten alloy bar easy to machine?

Much easier than pure tungsten. The nickel-iron or nickel-copper binder gives the alloy enough ductility to machine well with conventional shop tooling, which is why it's a staple for machine shops, labs, and DIY machinists.

Are the edges finished?

Bars ship with sharp, unrounded edges. Tolerances are ±0.002 inch on the cross-section and +0.060/-0 inch on length.

Can you make a custom size or alloy?

Yes. We can cut or custom-make any bar to your specifications, and we offer custom alloys — contact mts@tungsten.com with your dimensions for a quote. Material certs are available on request.
