Frequently asked questions

How heavy is a tungsten cube?

The 1.5 inch cube weighs exactly one kilogram (2.2 lb). The 1 cm cube is 18 g (0.64 oz), the 1 inch is 0.66 lb, the 2 inch is 5.2 lb, the 3 inch is 17.6 lb, and the 7 inch weighs 223 lb.

Is the cube pure tungsten?

It is MT-18F tungsten heavy alloy: 95% tungsten with a nickel-iron balance, made to ASTM B777 Class 3. The alloy keeps nearly all of tungsten's density while allowing the precision machining and polished finish that pure tungsten can't easily take.

How dense is it?

About 18 grams per cubic centimeter, more than twice the density of steel and close to gold. That is why even a small cube feels startlingly heavy in your hand.

Is the tungsten cube magnetic?

Slightly. The small iron content in the alloy gives it a mild response to a strong magnet.

How precisely is it made?

Each cube is machined to ±0.002 inch on every dimension (±0.005 inch for the 5 to 7 inch sizes), with a 0.040 inch radius on every edge and a fine Ra 0.8 finish on the large faces.

What comes with the cube?

The 1 inch and 1.5 inch cubes come with a clear polycarbonate display base. The 2 and 2.5 inch cubes come with a colored plastic display base. The 1 cm, 0.5 inch, and 3 to 7 inch cubes come with no base.

How should I care for it?

Handle it gently and keep it away from hard surfaces. The polished faces can scratch, and the cube's weight means a drop can damage what it lands on.
