Frequently asked questions

How heavy is a tungsten sphere?

The 1" sphere is 0.32 lb, the 1.5" is 1.09 lb, the 1.75" is 1.72 lb, the 2.175" is 3.30 lb, the 2.5" is about 5 lb, the 2.565" is 5.42 lb, the 2.75" is 6.61 lb, and the 4" sphere weighs 20.54 lb.

Is the sphere pure tungsten?

It is MT-17F tungsten heavy alloy: 90% tungsten with a nickel-iron balance at about 17 g/cm³. The alloy keeps most of tungsten's density while taking the precision machining and finish that pure tungsten can't easily take.

How does it compare to the pure tungsten sphere?

Our Pure Tungsten Sphere is 99.95% tungsten at 19.3 g/cm³, offered in 2.250" and 2.750" diameters. This alloy sphere comes in a wider size range, from 1" to 4".

Is it safe to handle?

Yes. Solid tungsten alloy is inert, non-radioactive, and non-toxic — handle and display it freely.

What is it for?

Display and collection. Machined from tungsten heavy alloy, it is an excellent contemporary addition to a desk at work or a side table at home — some of the densest material you can hold.
